Community invited to Life in our Cemeteries event at Eden

Bega Valley Shire Council and the Atlas of Life invite community members to Eden Cemetery on Saturday 6 September from 11am to 3pm for another educational Life in our Cemeteries event.

Bega Valley Shire Council and the Atlas of Life invite community members to Eden Cemetery on Saturday 6 September from 11am to 3pm for another educational Life in our Cemeteries event.

This special event will give participants the chance to explore Eden’s unique natural environment and cultural history through guided Walk and Talk sessions and engaging lunchtime talks.

Council’s Environmental Management Officer, Erin Moon said the series continues to highlight the biodiversity and heritage quietly thriving in the region’s cemeteries.

“Eden Cemetery is more than a resting place, its location across the road from the beach makes it a unique place where native plants, wildlife and the stories of the local community all come together,” Ms Moon said.

“As part of the event, participants will explore the coastal flora around the cemetery and the nearby beach dunes with botanist Jackie Miles and discover the cemetery’s history with long-term member of Eden Cemetery Committee, Peter Phillips. Deb Taylor will also lead a walk and talk to uncover the rich life of invertebrates.”

At lunchtime, Council’s Coastal Management Officer, Rachel Duczynski will discuss coastal erosion and how Council manages our beach environment.

“Coastal processes are constantly shaping our beaches and Eden is no exception,” Ms Duczynski said.

“I’ll be sharing the science of coastal management and the ways we work to balance environmental values with community use.”

Wendy Noble from the Friends of Little Penguins Group Eden will provide an update on the reestablishment of a penguin colony in Eden and members of the newly established Eden Landcare will speak about the group’s work supporting biodiversity and conservation in the local area.

A light lunch will be provided and participants are encouraged to document what they discover on the iNaturalist app, which helps identify the plants, insects and animals observed during the event.
