Art meets environment in waste truck transformation project
Bega Valley Shire Council is partnering with South East Arts to deliver an exciting public art initiative that combines creativity with sustainability.

Bega Valley Shire Council is partnering with South East Arts to deliver an exciting public art initiative that combines creativity with sustainability.
Local artists are invited to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) for a bold new project—designing original artwork to wrap eight new waste collection trucks that will operate across the shire from 2025 through to 2034.
“The project celebrates the natural beauty of our region, stretching from the mountains to the sea while promoting waste reduction and resource reuse,” Waste Strategy Coordinator, Tim Cook said.
“Working with South East Arts, our plan is to commission artwork that carries an optimistic message about waste and sustainability.
“It’s a great chance for a local artist to have their work seen by thousands of people every week as the trucks travel about the community.
“We’re looking forward to seeing what creative ideas come through. Something that captures the spirit of our shire and the amazing talent we have here.
“This project is about managing waste in a sustainable way and supporting our local creative community; giving artists paid opportunities and a platform to share their work in a lasting way.”
The project and new fleet of waste collection trucks is part of Council’s new waste collection contract with Cleanaway, a long-term service provider reappointed through a competitive tender process in late 2024.
“There will be no changes to current collection days,” Mr Cook said. “It’s business as usual with a fresh new look.”
Artists living in the shire are eligible to apply, either as individuals or in collaboration. Up to three shortlisted artists will each receive $2,000 to develop concepts, with the final commissioned artist receiving $8,000.
EOIs are open now and close 5pm Wednesday 23 July.
Shortlisted artists will be announced on Friday 25 July, with the final design revealed in mid-August.
