Bega Valley Shire residents are invited to be part of the nationwide Garage Sale Trail event, taking place over two weekends on 8–9 November and 15–16 November.

Council’s Waste Education Officer, Rebecca Bruce said the event encourages reuse and recycling while giving locals the chance to declutter, earn extra cash and discover hidden treasures.

“The Garage Sale Trail is Australia’s biggest celebration of second-hand goods, with thousands of sales taking place in communities across the country,” Ms Bruce said.

“It helps keep good stuff in use for longer while cutting down on the waste that ends up in landfill.

“In 2024, we saw record participation, with 2,181 local residents taking part as sellers or shoppers. Together, they hosted 139 garage sales and stalls — a huge jump from just 28 the year before.”

Ms Bruce said residents can choose whether to host a garage sale, shop the trail or both.

“Because it runs across two weekends, people can take advantage of being both buyers and sellers,” she said.

“Last year, the average seller made close to $500, so it’s a great chance to boost your wallet as well as your wardrobe.

“Residents can host their own sale, team up with neighbours or join a local market. They can be anything from a small yard sale to a huge community car boot sale.

“And for shoppers, it really is the nation’s biggest second-hand treasure hunt. There’s something for everyone – from designer fashion and retro homewares to kids’ toys, tools, plants and books.

“It’s not just about what you sell or buy, it’s about the joy of discovering something new, meeting people in your community and knowing you’re making a positive difference.”

Register your sale for free at the Garage Sale Trail website and receive tips, signs and promotional tools to boost your success.

Residents can also search for sales near them at Garage Sale Trail 2025 and create a list of favourites to visit over the two weekends.
