Bega Valley Shire Council is inviting feedback on three concept design options for the renewal of Cuttagee Bridge.

The three concept designs are:

  • Option 1: A single-lane hybrid structure with non-structural decorative timber, attached shared pathway and handrails
  • Option 2: A two-lane hybrid structure with non-structural decorative timber, attached shared pathway and handrails
  • Option 3: A two-lane concrete construction with attached shared pathway and handrails.

The three concept designs have been informed by investigation and consultation work undertaken in the last four years including community engagement in early 2025 which gathered valuable insights into bridge usage, design preferences and priorities. The options have also taken  into consideration relevant design and safety standards applicable to bridges.

This phase of engagement is an opportunity for the community to share what they value about each of the three concept design options.

Feedback will help inform Council’s decision on the preferred option to progress to detailed design, expected for consideration at the November 2025 Council meeting.

Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick emphasised the importance of ongoing community feedback throughout this project.

“Cuttagee Bridge is a critical piece of infrastructure and forms part of the local identity, Mayor Fitzpatrick said.

“As part of our funding commitment with the State Government we have compiled three concept designs, and I encourage everyone to take part in shaping what comes next.”

“We’ve listened carefully to what matters most to residents—heritage, safety, and accessibility.

“There is much more work to be done to take one of these concept designs to a level where it is shovel ready.

“We want to gather feedback on these concepts to ensure Cuttagee Bridge serves the Bega Valley for generations to come.”

“I urge everyone to visit the Have Your Say page and complete the survey. You can also chat with the project team at a drop-in session in Bega or Bermagui, participate in the public forum in Murrah, or visit the Bega and Bermagui libraries to view the concept designs.

“Your feedback is vital to ensuring the final design reflects our shared values.”

Dr Michael Holland, Member for Bega, said:

“Cuttagee Bridge is not only a vital transport link but also a place of deep cultural and community significance. These concept designs reflect what we’ve heard from residents—that preserving the bridge’s heritage while improving safety and accessibility is essential. I encourage everyone to have their say, so together we can deliver a bridge that respects our history, supports local needs and serves the Bega Valley well into the future.”

Feedback will help inform Council’s decision on the preferred option to progress to detailed design.

The public exhibition period will start on 8 September 2025 and runs until 6 October 2025.
