Bega Valley Shire Council’s Aquatics Facilities Coordinator, Nic Hoynes has been named a finalist in the 2025 Local Government NSW Emerging Leaders Award.

Originally from Northern Inland NSW, Nic grew up around the local pool his family managed, sparking a lifelong connection to water safety and community that led to his career in aquatics.

“Living in a place with beautiful beaches and lakes, I know how important it is to give people safe, welcoming spaces where they can build confidence in the water and learn a love of swimming,” Mr Hoynes said.

“I’m really proud of what our team has done so far, and I’m excited about what’s ahead—especially the big upgrade to the Bega War Memorial Pool.

“I’m honoured to have been named a finalist in the Emerging Leaders Award and would like to congratulate Jessica Colless from Camden Council on winning the award.”

Council’s CEO, Anthony McMahon, said Nic’s recognition was well deserved.

“Nic leads a team that has helped thousands of children and adults learn to swim and grow their confidence in the water,” Mr McMahon said. “He also brings a real passion for community, both in and out of work.”

Outside of his Council role, the dad of two volunteers with the Pambula Surf Club, serves as Secretary of the Sapphire Coast Hockey Club and is a Director of the Far South Coast Hockey Association. He’s also a regular speaker at industry events across the state.

“This recognition says a lot about Nic’s leadership over nearly a decade in his role, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what he goes on to achieve,” Mr McMahon said.

Projects recognised at state awards

Council was also named a finalist in three categories at the 2025 Local Government NSW Awards.

While no category wins were brought home this year, Mr McMahon said it was still an important recognition of the strong, community-focused work being delivered by Council.

“Our Barclay Street project in Eden was acknowledged in the Asset and Infrastructure category for creating a connected and accessible recreational space for the whole community,” he said.

“We were also pleased to see our Business Activator Program recognised for the support it provided to local businesses following fires, floods and COVID, and our Internal Leadership Program acknowledged for driving smarter, more proactive decision-making across the organisation.

“After winning the AR Bluett Memorial Award this year, these projects show we’re always focused on getting things done that really matter to our community.

“We’re proud of the progress so far and look forward to continuing to deliver services and infrastructure that make a real difference across the Bega Valley.”
