Are you ready to unleash your inner scientist?

This National Science Week (9–17 August), Bega Valley Shire Library is joining forces with the Australian National University (ANU) and a host of science-loving organisations to bring the magic of discovery straight to our community.

Get set for two events jam-packed with excitement, hands-on learning and those ‘aha!’ moments that make science awesome.

Council’s Acting Library Services Coordinator, Linda Albertson said the Bermagui Library will unveil its Citizen Science Corner on Tuesday 12 August at 10.30am.

“We are fortunate to have two inspiring guest speakers at this event, Raymond Daly and Deb Taylor from Atlas of Life,” Ms Albertson said.

“Raymond will demonstrate how to use the iNaturalist app and share the captivating tale of how citizen science is blossoming right here in the Bega Valley.

“Deb will bring the wonder of biodiversity to life, showing just how important every creature, plant and ecosystem is to the health of our planet.

“Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or just curious, you’ll discover how easy (and fun!) it is to help real scientists with your own observations.

“The Citizen Science Corner is made possible with funding received from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, Science Engagement Program: Maker Projects for Community STEM Engagement, organised by the Australian Library and Information Association in partnership with the Australian Citizen Science Association.”

Ms Albertson said the excitement keeps rolling with our hugely popular Science Week Fun Day at the Bega Library on Saturday 16 August from 10am to 1.30pm.

“This is no ordinary library day—step into a world of interactive stations, demonstrations and presentations for all ages.

“ANU Medical School students will be on hand to show us what to do in the event of a snake bite, teach us about the mysteries of our nervous system and find out what germs get up to.

“The Atlas of Life will have its Micro-Eye microscope so visitors can marvel at the world of insects and the Eden Game Development Centre will run digital drawing and collaborative gaming sessions.

“Respected local horticulturalist, David Jones will speak about the orchids of the south coast and Council’s Environment team will educate all on the importance of tree hollows and nestboxes.

“The NSW National Parks and Wildlife team will have their educational activity trailer on-site and the Bega Valley Shire Library will give everyone a chance to drive a mini rover over a moonscape, play with Ozobots or participate in our fruit DNA experiment.”

This inspiring Australia NSW initiative is supported by the Australian Government as part of National Science Week.
