Bega Valley Shire Council is urging dog owners in the Coolagolite and Kameruka areas to take immediate action following several distressing incidents involving livestock attacks by dogs.

Council’s Compliance and Ranger Services Coordinator, Trudi Badullovich emphasised the urgent need for responsible pet ownership.

“Council Rangers have been notified of multiple dog attacks in these areas, causing significant harm to animals and adding to the challenges already faced by local farmers,” Ms Badullovich said.

“Under the Companion Animals Act 1998, owners are legally responsible for preventing their dogs from escaping. Serious breaches can lead to fines, penalties, or dogs being declared ‘Nuisance’, ‘Menacing’, or ‘Dangerous’.”

All dog owners must:

  • keep dogs securely contained at all times
  • ensure dogs are microchipped, registered and wear a collar with contact details
  • keep dogs on a lead and under control when off the property, unless in a designated off-leash area.

To report a dog attack, contact Council’s Ranger Services on (02) 6499 2222.

Information to assist the report includes when and where the incident occurred, a description of the dog, a description of the owner or person in charge of the dog, vehicle details (if involved) and any photos of evidence.

Your cooperation is vital in protecting our community and animals. Let’s work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all.
