Council invests more than $150,000 in community hall upgrades

Bega Valley Shire Council is investing more than $150,000 this financial year to deliver upgrades at several community halls, continuing its commitment to preserving and enhancing these important community assets.

Council’s Halls and Cemeteries Officer, Gabrielle Ward said community halls are vital spaces for social, cultural and recreational activities in towns and villages across the shire.

“Our community halls are hubs where people come together — for markets, concerts, meetings, weddings or simply to connect with neighbours,” Ms Ward said.

“They play an essential role in fostering connection and belonging, and many have heritage value that reflects the history and character of our towns and villages.”

“The annual upgrade program helps preserve their heritage value and ensures they remain safe and functional for years to come.”

This year’s program will deliver a range of works to improve safety, accessibility and comfort for hall users while protecting the structural integrity and heritage character of the buildings.

“There will be deck repairs to Murrah Hall, a new deck at Rocky Hall, additional lighting at Brogo Hall and gutter replacement at Quaama,” Ms Ward said.

“From drainage improvements to roof repairs and building improvements, these works will see these much-loved spaces remain in good shape so they can continue to bring people together for years to come.”

Developed in partnership with local hall committees, the upgrade program reviews the needs of the 18 community halls across the shire, ensuring funding is directed to priority works identified by those who use and care for the facilities most.

“The knowledge and commitment of hall committees is invaluable,” Ms Ward said.

“They’re the eyes and ears on the ground — identifying issues early, helping us prioritise works and often volunteering their own time to support events and upkeep,” she said.
