Cuttagee Bridge is nearing the end of its functional life and planning is underway to determine its future design and configuration.
Cuttagee Bridge is nearing the end of its functional life and is now subject to weight restrictions due to the deteriorating condition of its ageing timbers. Council is now in a position where it needs to make difficult decisions about how to manage this bridge into the future.
Council has a duty to ensure the assets it provides and manages are safe, secure and fit for purpose. This includes Cuttagee Bridge, which is situated on a regional road that Council manages on behalf of the NSW Government. Any decisions about the future of Cuttagee Bridge will need to balance the upfront and ongoing cost and funding sources against a number of competing principles such as risk and safety, durability, economics, heritage and tourism values, and environmental issues.
Council has been provided $15 million under the Regional Roads Program administered by Transport for NSW for the delivery of the Cuttagee Bridge project. Council has engaged a bridge designer and three concept designs have been developed as required by the Transport for NSW funding deed. The scope of the three concept design options are outlined below:
A concept design is the beginning of the bridge design process. It provides a big-picture visual of how the bridge will look and work. A concept design focuses on general shape, location and type of bridge. A concept design is used to determine feasibility of a project and likely costs. Once a concept design is selected it will be further refined into a detailed design that includes technical plans on how to actually build the bridge.
In March 2025, Council launched an initial Have Your Say to gather community feedback on key aspects of the Cuttagee Bridge project, including design preferences, construction impacts, and road closures. The initial survey invited input on topics such as bridge usage, temporary road closures, community events, design features, and the bridge’s historical and aesthetic significance to inform the development of the three concept design options.
The survey responses and feedback from both Have Your Say surveys, drop-in sessions and overall public exhibition period will be compiled into a Community Engagement Outcomes Report, which will be provided to Council prior to their determination of a preferred concept option to progress to detailed design.
Bega Valley Shire Council is publicly exhibiting for feedback three design concepts for Cuttagee Bridge. This survey aims to gather feedback on what the community values about each of the three concept design options and to assist in assessing the merits of each design for the Cuttagee Bridge project.
This survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.
We have three information sessions where you can discuss the concept designs with the project team.
The three concept designs and project information will also be on display at Council libraries in Bermagui and Bega.
