Bega Valley Shire Council is investing in the future of local water infrastructure with two major reservoir replacement projects now underway in Bemboka and Bermagui.

“These important upgrades will deliver better water quality and long-term supply security for local communities,” Water and Sewer Services Manager, Steve Marshall said.

“In Bemboka, the town’s 36-year-old steel water tank is being replaced with a 420,000 litre, modern fusion-bonded epoxy coated reservoir, designed to last at least 50 years.

“The old tank has served the Bemboka community well, but recent assessments confirmed it’s time for an upgrade.”

To keep the water flowing during construction, the old tank will remain in operation until the new one is ready to go.

Council will provide advance notice of any short supply interruptions when the switchover takes place.

In Bermagui, Council is replacing the existing concrete tank on Box Flat Road, a 1.6 megalitre reservoir that supplies the Brogo–Bermagui water system.

"The current tank has worn out over time and can no longer be safely or reliably used. Leaving it in place would put the community’s water supply at increasing risk,” Mr Marshall said.

“Rather than undertaking costly short-term repairs, a new 1 megalitre concrete tank will be built to meet current and future needs."

Construction at the Bermagui site is scheduled from May to August 2025, following the demolition of the old tank.

A bypass system is already in place to ensure residents experience no interruptions to their water service.

“These projects are a critical investment in the health and resilience of our shire that dovetails with recent upgrades to the Bega and Brogo Water Treatment Plants,” Mr Marshall said.
