11 March 2025
Bega Valley Shire Council’s CEO Anthony McMahon has sincerely apologised to the community for the inconvenience and concern caused by the Towamba Road closure early signage and late media notification issued this afternoon.
“I acknowledge the impact this has had on community members and that the decision to erect signage prior to formal widespread public notification, was an administrative oversight.
“The signs were erected before we issued our media advice this afternoon. An oversight that has subsequently caused some inconvenience and unnecessary angst,” Mr McMahon said.
“The roadworks are necessary due to damage from multiple flood events. The community should have been adequately notified in advance. The lack of notice prevented some community from adjusting their schedules, and I apologise for this.
“We will hold a community meeting on Thursday 13 March, at 4pm at the Towamba Community Hall to provide details on the upcoming work and road closure details with Council staff and the contractor doing the works in attendance.
The works involve constructing a block retaining wall to improve the durability of the road and repairing the road surface damaged during the recent flood events.
Local contractors will carry out the works starting from Monday, 17 March. The road will be closed between 9am and 3pm Monday to Saturday during the first phase of this work.
Outside of working hours, a single lane will remain open with portable traffic lights in place to allow road users to pass in one direction at a time. Road users should expect delays of up to 15 minutes when the single lane is open.
Staff and contractors are still working through options regarding a full road closure to all vehicles or whether it would be possible to have limited access for light vehicles under traffic control during the next heavy construction phase. More information will be released as details are confirmed.
“I want to reassure everyone that we are doing everything possible to minimise disruptions during these important works to improve the durability of the road and repair the road surface, which was damaged during past flood events.
“For enquiries regarding the closure, please direct them to Council’s Project Engineer (Disaster Recovery), Chris Hedditch on (02) 6499 2222 or [email protected].
“I am committed to learning from this experience and making necessary improvements. I thank the community again for their understanding and cooperation during this time.”
More information about these works can be found on Council’s website.
