Policy review by Councillors to begin

Bega Valley Shire Councillors will be reviewing all Council policies over the next 12 months, in line with the requirements of the Local Government Act 1993.

Bega Valley Shire Councillors will be reviewing all Council policies over the next 12 months, in line with the requirements of the Local Government Act 1993.

CEO Anthony McMahon said while this is a procedural requirement under the Local Government Act, it’s also a good opportunity to make sure Council policies provide clear information about what the community can expect in their interactions with Council and the way decisions are made.

“Council has more than 60 policies covering the breadth of our operations, from Access to Information to Water and Sewerage Services,” Mr McMahon said.

“With the new Council sworn in, we can begin the process of reviewing our policies and seeking community feedback on any proposed changes.”

After each policy is reviewed by Councillors, it will be placed on public exhibition for 28 days to give the community an opportunity to provide feedback. The policies will be released in batches.

If submissions are received during the public exhibition period, they will be presented to Council with staff recommendations before the final policy is adopted.

The first batch of policies for public exhibition from today, 22 May are:

  • Soil and water management
  • Waste Services
  • Council related Development Application conflict of interest guidelines
  • Trees and vegetation on public land
  • Companion animal management
  • Enforcement and compliance
  • Cemeteries and memorials
  • Water and Sewerage Services
  • Land under Council jurisdiction
  • Asset Management
  • Transport Services
  • Governance
  • Behaviour of Councillors and staff
  • Conditions of employment
  • Dedication of public land (proposed to be revoked).
