Bega Valley Shire Council is seeking community feedback on the draft Wolumla Flood Study, which forms a critical part of the Floodplain Risk Management Plan for the Wolumla Creek, Frog’s Hollow Creek and Greendale Creek catchment areas.

“The study assesses both current and future flood behaviour, helping to identify flood risk areas and informing strategies to manage these risks in the future,” Council’s Works and Assets Manager, Gary Louie said.

“The study, prepared with the expertise of consultants, Rhelm will help identify flood-prone areas and suggest potential mitigation measures.

“By providing our residents and property owners with this information, we aim to improve flood resilience and help ensure future development is carried out safely, with consideration for flood risks.

“The draft findings include key insights into flood depths, speed of water movement and overland flooding risks within local areas like Wolumla village.

“This will assist in guiding future development planning to minimise exposure to flood risks, particularly where new buildings or major redevelopment projects may be affected.

“While the study will not result in immediate changes for most property owners, those looking to redevelop their properties may need to comply with new flood-related development controls.”

To ensure the community has a chance to engage with the study and its findings, Council is hosting a drop-in session where residents can speak directly with the project team. The session will be held from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on Tuesday 6 May, at Wolumla Public School Library.

The draft study documents are available for review on Council’s website, and community members are encouraged to provide feedback via an online survey or at the drop-in session. Feedback is open until Sunday, 18 May.

"The goal of this consultation is to ensure that everyone in the community has the opportunity to share their views and concerns,” Mr Louie said.

“We value the input of our residents and will carefully consider all feedback before proceeding with the final floodplain management plan that will go to Council for endorsement next year.
